Excerpts from Physio-Control *LIFEPAK CR Plus and LIFEPAK EXPRESS Defibrillator Operating Instructions*
Doc. 3201686-015 (Rev. 07/2014) | Chapter 5 Caring for Your Defibrillator (5-1 ~ 5-9), Appendix A Specifications (A-2 ~ A-4)
Applies to the LIFEPAK CR family (original CR, CR Plus and EXPRESS share the same SafeGuard power system)
一. Power System Architecture (SafeGuard)
Component Nature Function
Internal battery Built-in, not user-replaceable Actual power source that supplies defibrillation energy
CHARGE-PAK battery charger Plug-in, single-use, non-rechargeable Continuously trickle-charges the internal battery
QUIK-PAK electrode package Single-use consumable Delivers defibrillation energy; not reusable
Key logic: the CHARGE-PAK is a *charger*, not a battery — all defibrillation energy comes from the internal battery. The two consumables are used as a pair, share the same expiry date, and must be replaced together (official warning: replacing only one may leave the device inoperative).
二. Pairing Rule (Important)
·A CHARGE-PAK becomes internally linked to the first defibrillator into which it is inserted.
·If removed from one unit and inserted into another, the second unit will NOT operate correctly; the CHARGE-PAK must then be discarded together with its electrode package and replaced with a new kit.
·The CHARGE-PAK must remain in the device at all times (including storage and transport); removing it can damage the internal battery.
三. Replacement Cycle (2-Year Program)
Replace the CHARGE-PAK + QUIK-PAK electrode package as a set under any of these conditions:
1.After the defibrillator has been used in a rescue;
2.When the CHARGE-PAK symbol appears in the ready display;
3.When the electrode package Use By date has expired (the date is pre-programmed into the CHARGE-PAK and visible in the display).
The electrode Use By date is visible through the clear window on the top right of the case; replace both items at the same time to keep the replacement cycles in sync.

四. CHARGE-PAK Replacement Procedure
4.Press the release latch on the side (in the direction of the arrow); the old charger pops out.
5.Insert the new CHARGE-PAK and press firmly until it clicks into place.
6.Confirm that the CHARGE-PAK symbol is gone and the OK symbol appears on the display.
Charging after replacement:
·If the ! symbol is still shown after replacement, the internal battery is low and needs time to recharge.
·After prolonged use or multiple discharges, recharging can take up to 3 days; once OK appears, the internal battery is adequately charged.
·In an emergency, attempt to use the device even if the ! symbol is visible.
Temperature warning (official CAUTION):
·Ambient temperature during charging must stay between 0°–50°C (32°–122°F); the internal battery may not charge at low temperatures.
·Exposure above 50°C for more than 7 consecutive days can permanently damage the internal battery.

五. Disposal of a Used CHARGE-PAK
7.Insert the supplied discharger tool into the old charger (do not remove it once inserted).
8.Wait at least 9 days for the battery to fully discharge.
9.Dispose of it in accordance with local regulations. NEVER recharge, disassemble, crush or incinerate (risk of explosion or fire).
六. Daily Readiness Checks
·The device runs a weekly automatic self-test plus a self-test at every power-on; no routine maintenance is required.
·Periodically verify: ① the OK symbol is visible on the ready screen; ② the electrode Use By date has not expired; ③ other emergency supplies.
·On abnormal status the OK symbol disappears and one of the following is shown:
·– CHARGE-PAK symbol → replace the consumable kit
·– ATTENTION symbol → at least 6 shocks or 42 minutes remaining; low charge
·– WRENCH symbol → service required; contact authorized service
七. Specifications (Appendix A)
Item Official Specification
Device capacity (fully charged) CR Plus: 30 full discharges / 210 min of operating time; EXPRESS: 20 discharges / 140 min
Recharge rate (new CHARGE-PAK, >15°C) 24 h → 6 discharges / 42 min; 72 h → 20 discharges / 140 min
Operating temperature 0°–50°C (32°–122°F)
Long-term storage temperature 15°–35°C (59°–95°F)
Short-term storage temperature -40°–70°C (≤ 1 week)
Relative humidity 5–95% (non-condensing)
Water resistance IPX4 splash-proof (with electrode and CHARGE-PAK installed)
Charge time (200 J / 360 J) <9 s / <15 s (when fully charged or ≤15 discharges)
Power-on to ready-to-shock <26 s (200 J) / <32 s (360 J)
八. Cleaning & Storage Notes
·Approved cleaning agents: non-abrasive soap and water, quaternary ammonium compounds, isopropyl alcohol, peracetic acid solutions. Do NOT use bleach, phenols, abrasive or flammable cleaners; do not steam or autoclave.
·The CHARGE-PAK and electrodes are NOT cleanable — discard and recycle after use.
·Do not store or use the device in atmospheres with flammable gases.
·When requesting service under warranty, provide: model, MIN part number, serial number and description of the fault.
Appendix: Replacement Kit Part Numbers by Model
Model CHARGE-PAK + Electrode Replacement Kit
LIFEPAK CR Plus 11403-000001 (Kit 1) / 11403-000002 (Kit 2)
LIFEPAK EXPRESS 11403-000002
Note: The original LIFEPAK CR (2003, Medtronic Physio-Control era) shares the same CHARGE-PAK power system as the CR Plus/EXPRESS, so this battery maintenance content applies equally. The CR was discontinued in 2019; official consumable supply is expected to last until approximately 2027.
